The DigiDeck DVR is an ATAPI 2.5" hard disk based industrial multi-use DVR providing broadcast quality digital video. The DigiDeck PC digital video recorder records video to removable drives as QuickTime files for viewing on a PC, while still maintaining active analogue composite and Y/C outputs. The DigiDeck is the ideal replacement for analogue tape decks and laser disk players. It delivers all the advantages of clean digital images and the random access non-linear benefits of hard disk media, as well as the familiar transport controls, inputs and outputs found on current analogue VTRs. The intuitive front panel touch screen provides access to record and playback settings including user selectable compression, speed of play and play list management. |

Options There are two options for video output: Option 1. S-Video [Y/C] & Composite output (default). Option 2. Component & Composite output. Please specifiy Component output if it is required, otherwise the default S-Video [Y/C] output will be supplied. There is no extra cost for Component output. Please not there are seperate items for removable drives, and dual channel units, available in the Fast Forward category. |

M-JPEG Compression The M-JPEG compression ratio setting on all Fast Forward Video products are user selectable from 4:1 to 20:1. In practice, it is advisable to set the compression to correspond with the best quality to storage ratio. A setting of 7:1 is a good setting for general purpose Betacam images, 10:1 for S-VHS, 15:1 for VHS. The rule of thumb for minutes of storage generally available is compression ratio is roughly equivalent to minutes per gigabyte. For example: 10:1 compression ratio x 80 gigabytes = 10 x 80 = roughly 800 minutes recording time, or approximately 12 hours. |
Controlling Multiple DigiDeck There are three practical ways control more than one FFV DigiDeck simultaneously: 1. Use the Playback Technologies Raptor Software. The Raptor software runs on Windows XP/2000 and can control up to 128 DigiDecks via RS-422 at once. The Digi EdgePort USB2.0 to RS-232 port (1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 port) converters are an easy way to add more RS-232 ports to a PC. We highly recommend the RS-232 version of the Edgeport and the RS-422-to-RS-232 adaptors, because we have not been able to get the RS-422 version of the EdgePort series to work. This is a popular solution for monitoring races. 2. Use an broadcast VTR control unit. The DigiDecks use the standard Sony RS-422 control protocol, so anything that would control a Sony VTR (eg, BVW75) would control one of these. Fast Forward recommend the controllers made by Lance Design. 3. Develop or get developed, hardware or software which controls the DigiDecks. The control protocol document is available under the summary section to the right. This lists all of the RS-422 commands required to send and receive commands to and from a DigiDeck. You could develop a simple or complex bit of hardware or software based around this protocol. |
