The Fast Forward Elite HDVM232 is a portable HD-SD recorder / player that can mount on the back of a camera or be used as a standalone recorder using (FFV compatible) RS-232 control protocol. The Elite HD accepts an incoming HD-SDI or SD-SDI video signal with 8 channels of embedded audio. Lossless compression is achieved with the JPEG 2000 (J2K) codec and the video is stored to a hot swappable 2.5SATA drive. The Elite HD also supports playback of recorded video. The compressed video is stored in a native format and uses a QuickTime file wrapper. The Elite HD ships with a 120GB hard drive however this recorder will accept a 500GB drive that records over 8 hours of HD-SDI. J2K codec The Elite HD uses a J2K codec that offers a number of advantages over competing products: - Better image quality at the same file size
- 25%__5% smaller file sizes at comparable image quality
- Lossless compression mode (identical to original image)
- Transparency and translucency (alpha-channel) support
- Up to 10 generations of post production without producing visual artefacts
There are 4 models of the Elite HD Recorder which include |
Features - Provides tools to capture higher quality video from existing HD camcorder systems than is possible from their proprietary internal recording systems
- Uses high capacity readily available storage media, capable of storing more HD footage at a lower cost and higher quality
- Direct attachment to camcorder (V-Mount or Anton Bauer mounts available)
- High quality video - near lossless J2K codec records at data rates up to 100Mbits/s, offers 4:2:2 sampling and a full 10 bit quantisation
- 1080i, 720p and PAL 16:9 (853 x 576)
- File based work flow
- Low power consumption, lightweight, small size
- Rugged design
- Simple and intuitive to use

Fast Forward Elite HD and AJA Ki-Pro comparison chart We have received many requests for an Elite HD and Ki-Pro recorder comparison chart. In a nutshell, the Elite HD is specifically designed for portability and to be a cost effective accessory to any camera with HD-SDI / SD-SDI output. The Elite HD uses JPEG 2000 (J2K) which maximises image quality and incorporates a mathematically lossless compression enabling a reduction in the storage requirement.
The Ki-Pro uses Apple ProRes 422 which uses similar data rates, quantisation and sampling and designed for faster editing within Final Cut Pro (FCP) only but does not share the JPEG 2000 benefit of near lossless that can withstand 10 generations of post production before any visual artefacts are noticed. With the Ki-Pro you need to mount to a tripod with a separate power source because of the unit_ power consumption needs, which makes the user experience not only uncomfortable but impractical. | | AJA | FFV | | Weight | 1.59 kg (3.5 lbs) | 1.18 kg (2.6 lbs) | | Final Cut Pro Compatible? | Yes | Yes | | Compression | Apple ProRes 422 | JPEG 2000 (J2K) | | Generation Loss | | Minimum of 10 generations | | Drive Type | Expensive AJA proprietary drives | SATA hard drive (HDD) or solid state (SSD) drives | | Record Time with 250GB Drive | 2 hours | 4 hours | | Remote Control | None | RS-422 or RS-232 | | Dimensions | 3" H x 9" W x 5" D | 117.5mm H x 203.2mm W x 50.8mm D (4.625" H x 8" W x 2" D) | | Camera Dockable | Tripod (no battery dock) | Yes - V-Mount or Anton Bauer Gold Mount | | Power Draw | 21-30 W | 10.8W | | Power Source | AC/Battery | A/C or 14V DC - Camera Battery |
